Frank's STORY

My name is Frank and I’m co-owner here at FNPS! My mum first saw me when I was posted on the Pug Life Rescue Facebook page looking for my forever home. At the time Mama was struggling with her mental health and Dad thought I’d be just the right person to help her. I was roughly one and a half when I came to my forever home and I fitted in straight away with my new family. I’m the chief taste tester and treat stealer here at HQ and I take my job very seriously. Mama says she saved me but really I saved her and I make her smile every single day!

Rawhide is one of the biggest treats on the market and is also one of the most toxic and dangerous products you can feed your pooch! What's worse is it is often labelled as "natural". At Frank's Natural Pet Shop we always thoroughly research and discuss the manufacturing process of treats with our partners before we even place our first order so you can be safe and confident that we only provide the very best and safest treats for your doggos.
The "hides" used in rawhide could be from any type of mammal and could be from anywhere in the world. The process begins with the hides of animals from slaughterhouses being soaked in saltwater to slow down the rotting process while they're transported (usually to China) to tanneries where the leather process begins. Rawhide is a by-product of the leather manufacturing industry. The hides are then treated with a variety of chemicals in high concentrates such as lime, sodium sulphide, or sodium hydrosulphide which removes hair and fat to clean and further preserve them.
The outer layer goes to make leather goods such as clothing and furniture and the inner layer of the skin which is used as rawhide. This layer is also used to manufacture glue, gelatin and some cosmetics. Sounds delicious doesn't it?
They are often coated or dipped in other toxic chemicals to give them flavour and often dyed or painted with titanium oxide or bleach to turn them a brilliant pearly white. Great for teeth, not so great for your dog!
To preserve them further for shipping back to various countries and extend shelf life they are once again introduced to various chemicals. Depending on which country they were made in this can include formaldehyde, arsenic, and strychnine.

So... what's the difference?
We are extremely strict about the products we stock in store. This means hours of research and discussion with any new company we partner with. So we thought we'd share why our treats are completely different to rawhide treats. Grab a cuppa and discover the process behind all our delicious, safe and natural treats!

With all our rolls, braids and other hairless treats the manufacturing process begins with the skins. While technically we could call them "hide", this is due to them being from the buffalo, cow or camel skins and nothing at all do to with rawhide. The beef (cow) skins start off by being separated from the top layer of skin which usually goes to produce furniture or clothing. The skin we use is under the top layer of skin called the epidermis. This layer is rich in collagen and just tough enough for your dog to chew on and fully digest. The outer layer of skin is often very tough and difficult for your dog to fully digest.
The second step is to remove hair and kill any bacteria. The hair is removed and bacteria killed using a very low concentration (less than 3%) of hydrogen peroxide which is washed away with water before being rolled and simply air dried. The level of hydrogen peroxide needed to cause harm to dogs is over 10% and by washing the skins afterwards the process leaves minimal trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Our bodies naturally product more hydrogen peroxide than what's left in the skins so they're perfectly safe for our furry friends to eat!
While the skins may appear white, this is because the top layer of skin which the fur is attached to is removed in the washing process. Water penetrates the structure and the air drying process causes a small amount of steam which gives the skin the white appearance. There is absolutely NO BLEACH or other chemicals used in the process of these rolls or any other treats which we sell.

Buffalo Rolls are back!!
You have been asking for weeks and we are thrilled to have partnered with a new company who manufacture their products with no chemicals or additives! Our new rolls are made from buffalo head skin (extra thick and chewy!). They're not smoked or flavoured and are 100% natural! Keep your eyes peeled for our post tomorrow explaining the manufacturing process of our skins and other chews which we will stock from the same company.
We are confident our rolls will be delivered before our market on Sunday the 15th of September. If this changes we will post and let you know. Please be aware that we only have 60 rolls as a trial and are limited to 2 per customer at this weeks market in order to let as many customers try them as we can. We plan to stock large and XL versions of this product afterwards.

Our hearts and paws stand in solidarity with America today. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on not only the lives that were lost and the courageous efforts in the after math, but on the heroic efforts many dogs played in the search and rescue effort.
After the attacks of Sept. 11 more than 300 dogs took part in the search, rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero.
As the days went on rescue operations pivoted to a recovery mission, and cadaver dogs, trained to find human remains, were brought onto the scene.
Working alongside their handlers, the four-legged heroes worked tirelessly climbing huge piles of debris while fires still smouldered. The search for signs of life or human remains was mentally and physically taxing on the dogs, as the SAR dogs began to get discouraged and lose their search drive. Aware of the importance of morale in these dogs and to keep their motivation high, their handlers would stage a “mock find” so the dogs could feel successful.
In addition to search and rescue dogs at ground zero, therapy dogs provided comfort to the firemen, firewomen and rescue workers who continued to work countless of hours on the pile. They represented a respite from the surrounding destruction and debris, even only for a minute.
The heroism of these canines has been vastly documented and visitors to the 9/11 Memorial Museum can learn about the spirit and stories of these heroic dogs in a new special exhibition, “Dogs of 9/11" which we have been fortunate enough to visit and pay our respects.
The last known surviving search dog of 9/11, Bretagne, was laid to rest in 2016.

Happy International Lizard day! Benny the Bearded Dragon is now 8 months old and has settled well into life in our crash house. Frank loves his little brother and Benny likes to sit on top of him to keep nice and cosy.
